How Do You Wash a Grounding Sheet?

3 min read

TL;DR: Key Takeaways

  • Never use fabric softener or dryer sheets: both work by depositing a thin coating on fibre, and a coating sits between your skin and the conductive surface.
  • No bleach or whitening agents: including oxygen or “Oxi” powders, which attack the silver itself.
  • Two care patterns across the range: the cotton bedding is specified at 40 °C (105 °F) with liquid detergent; the premium and high-silver products are specified cold or gentle with a mild detergent.
  • Darkening is not a fault: slight discolouration over time is stated on the product pages as a natural property of the material, not a defect.

Machine wash with a liquid detergent, line dry or tumble on low heat, and never use fabric softener, bleach, whitening agents or dryer sheets. That last rule is the one that matters most: softeners and dryer sheets work by depositing a thin coating on fibre, and a coating on a conductive fibre sits between your skin and the thing it is meant to touch.

What exactly should I avoid?

  • Fabric softener — coats the conductive fibre and reduces conductivity over time.
  • Dryer sheets — same mechanism, applied in the dryer.
  • Bleach and whitening agents (including oxygen or "Oxi" powders) — these attack the silver itself.
  • High heat — keep tumble drying low.

What temperature and detergent?

Our own-stock products carry their own instructions, and they are not identical, so check the product page rather than applying one rule to everything. Two patterns exist across the range:

  • The cotton bedding — for example the Natural Fitted Grounding Bed Sheets — is specified as machine wash every 1–2 weeks at 40 °C (105 °F) using liquid detergent only.
  • The premium and high-silver products — for example the Liquid Silver™ Grounding Sheet — are specified as machine wash cold or gentle cycle with a mild detergent.

Liquid detergent is preferred over powder in both cases, because powder can leave undissolved residue in the weave.

What is the washing procedure, step by step?

  1. Unsnap the cord from the sheet’s connector tab and set it aside before the sheet goes into the machine.
  2. Wash the sheet on its own, or with other smooth bedding. Keep it away from towels, zips and hooks, which can snag the weave.
  3. Use liquid detergent only — the cotton bedding is specified at 40 °C (105 °F), the premium and high-silver products cold or gentle with a mild detergent.
  4. Add nothing else to the drum: no softener, no whitening agent, no bleach.
  5. Line dry, or tumble on low. Snap the cord back on once the sheet is dry.

How often should I wash it?

Every one to two weeks for the cotton bedding, which is roughly ordinary bed-linen frequency. The reason the product pages give is about conductivity rather than laundry habit: body oils accumulate on the fabric, and an oily film is itself an insulating layer.

Why does lotion matter?

For the same reason. The cotton products specify waiting at least an hour after applying lotions or body oils before sleeping on the sheet, so the skin has absorbed them rather than transferring them onto the fabric.

How do I dry it?

Line drying is the first choice. If you tumble dry, keep it on low — the cotton bedding specifies no more than 65 °C (150 °F). Do not add a dryer sheet.

The silver has darkened — is that a fault?

No. Silver may show slight discolouration over time with use and washing. Our product pages state this explicitly as a natural property of the material rather than a defect, and it does not affect function. If you want to confirm the fabric is still connected, the Grounding Tester Pen checks continuity directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I iron a grounding sheet?

Our care instructions do not call for ironing, and high heat is listed as something to avoid in drying. If you iron, use a low setting.

Can I dry clean it?

No. Dry cleaning solvents are not part of any of our stated care instructions, and the fabric is specified for machine washing.

Does washing wear the conductivity out?

Normal washing within the stated instructions is what the products are specified for. What measurably works against conductivity is the list above — softeners, dryer sheets, bleach — rather than washing itself.

What about products from other brands?

Follow their own care instructions. The guidance here is taken from our own-stock product specifications and should not be assumed to apply to anyone else's fabric.
