Which Grounding Mat Fits a Desk, a Floor or a Kit Bag?
4 min readShare
TL;DR: Key Takeaways
- Match the mat to the surface: a desk mat sits under forearms and a mouse; a floor mat takes shoes-off standing; the small pad is for a wrist.
- Measure the space first: desk depth and the gap under a monitor stand decide more than anything written on a product page.
- Cord length is the quiet constraint: the straight cord is 4.6 m (15 ft); the coiled cord relaxes to about 1.8 m and extends to 6 m (20 ft).
- Check the socket before you buy a mat: a plug-in socket tester tells you whether the earth contact in that room is connected.
Choose by surface and footprint. A desk mat goes under the forearms and mouse on a work surface; a larger floor mat takes standing use at a desk or bench; a small pad is a wrist-sized option beside a keyboard. All connect by a cord to the earth contact of a wall socket, through a built-in ≈91 kΩ ±1% current-limiting safety resistor.
Start with the room, not the product page
The most useful thing anyone has ever told us about mats came from a customer with a standing desk in a converted attic: the mat was the easy part, the socket was the problem. The only earthed socket in the room was behind a wardrobe on the far wall.
That is the order to work in. Walk to the place you actually sit or stand. Find the nearest socket. Check it is earthed with a plug-in tester, read against the legend printed on the tester itself. Then measure the distance, and only then look at sizes.
It saves the common disappointment, which is a mat that fits the desk perfectly and sits two metres further from the wall than the cord reaches.
Which mat for which surface?
Four own-stock options, and they divide cleanly by what they sit on.
| Mat | Footprint | Where it goes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grounding Mouse & Desk Mat | 25 × 25 cm | Beside a keyboard, under a wrist | €39.00 |
| Grounding Desk & Standing Mat | 60 × 40 cm | A work surface, or the floor at a standing desk | €69.00 |
| Large Grounding Desk or Floor Mat | Larger carbon-infused PU | Floor use, or a wide desk | €89.00 |
| Grounding Desk & Mouse Mat Set | Both mats together | A desk set up once and left alone | €103.00 |
The set costs less than buying the two pieces separately, which is the only reason to prefer it over picking one.
Desk or floor — how do you decide?
Two practical questions settle it.
- Do you sit or stand at that desk? A seated setup puts the forearms on the surface, so the mat belongs on the desk. A standing setup puts bare or socked feet on the floor, so the mat belongs under them.
- Does the desk have a glass top, a deep lip or a monitor arm clamp? Measure the clear depth between the keyboard and the front edge. That number, not the catalogue, decides between the 25 × 25 cm pad and the 60 × 40 cm mat.
If you move between a desk and a bench in a garage or a gym, the smaller pad travels better and the coiled cord takes up less bag than the straight one.
What to check before the first use
- Plug a socket tester into the socket you will actually use and read its own legend.
- Run the cord where nobody will catch a foot on it.
- Connect the cord to the mat, then to the earth contact of the socket.
- Wipe the surface with a damp cloth when it needs it; no bleach, no fabric softener.
Our own-stock products ship with an EU (Type F) plug as standard. Other plug types are available separately. If you are setting up in the United States or Canada, the FAQ answers it directly: Does it work with US or Canadian outlets?

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a desk mat on the floor?
Yes, if the footprint suits the space. The 60 × 40 cm mat works either way; the 25 × 25 cm pad is really a wrist-sized surface and is small for standing on.
How do I know the socket by my desk is earthed?
Plug in a socket tester matched to your country and read the lamp pattern against the legend printed on the tester. A socket can have the right shape and still not be wired to earth.
Which cord do I need for a mat?
A straight cord at 4.6 m (15 ft) suits a fixed desk. A coiled cord relaxes to about 1.8 m and extends to 6 m (20 ft), which keeps slack off the floor.
Do the mats come with a plug?
Our own-stock products include an EU (Type F) plug as standard. UK, US and AU plugs are available separately; for the United States or Canada, see Does it work with US or Canadian outlets?
How do I clean a mat?
Wipe it with a damp cloth. No bleach, no whitening agents, no fabric softener and no dryer sheets — the same rule as the fabrics.
